January 20, (THEWILL) – Lagos State reaffirmed its status as Africa’s tourism and entertainment capital with a record-breaking $71.6 million in revenue generated during the 2024 ‘Detty December’ season.

The impressive earnings were drawn from the tourism, hospitality, and entertainment sectors, showcasing Lagos’ economic potential as a global destination.

According to a report by MO Africa Consulting, the breakdown revealed that hotels accounted for $44 million, while short-let apartments contributed $13 million.

The report was disclosed over the weekend by the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, in a statement titled ‘Lagos State Detty December 2024/2025 Report.’

The 2024 Detty December season featured an eclectic mix of events that attracted both local and international audiences.

Highlights included the Mrs. Universe Africa event, Greater Lagos Fiesta, Spotify Wrapped Concert, Rhythm Unplugged, African Fashion Week, Lungu Boy Block Party, Lagos Countdown, and The La Vida Experience. Music concerts featuring Joeboy and other artists also drew massive crowds.

The festivities welcomed not only Lagos residents but also Nigerians in the diaspora, popularly referred to as IJGBs (I Just Got Back), as well as international tourists eager to experience Lagos’ dynamic cultural scene.

Beyond its economic contributions, ‘Detty December’ has become a cultural platform for celebrating Nigerian arts, music, and traditions. The season fosters unity, strengthens ties with the diaspora, and positions Lagos as a global hub for cultural tourism.

Aregbe emphasised the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to creating a Lagos that blends tradition with modern creativity. “Tourism remains a vital driver of economic growth and cultural preservation for Lagos State, with the Ember season playing a key role,” he said.

He highlighted how the season showcased the resilience and ingenuity of Lagosians, from local artisans to entrepreneurs shaping the entertainment and tourism industries.

The progress recorded during the festive season reflects the visionary leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat. Their dedication to fostering tourism and cultural growth laid the groundwork for the success of the season.

Aregbe stated, “The insights from this season will be carefully studied, with key lessons factored into the 2025 Lagos Tourism is Rising campaign.

“We look forward to building on this momentum, creating more opportunities for Lagosians, and solidifying our city as a beacon of tourism, culture, and economic excellence.”

Aregbe also expressed gratitude to the people of Lagos, industry stakeholders, performers, and artisans whose creativity and participation were instrumental in the success of ‘Detty December.’

He commended the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture for its pivotal role in ensuring the season’s success.
