March 01, (THEWILL) — The Lagos State Government has announced an 84-day traffic diversion plan along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway to enable reconstruction works by the Federal Ministry of Works on a key section of the corridor.
The diversion, which will affect the Lagos-bound carriageway between Super Bus-Stop and Ilepo Bus-Stop, is scheduled to run for 12 weeks, from Saturday, March 7, to Saturday, May 30, 2026.
In a statement on Sunday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the main carriageway from Super Bus-Stop to Ilepo Bus-Stop (inbound Lagos) will be completely closed to vehicular traffic during the reconstruction period.
Osiyemi explained that the temporary closure is necessary to facilitate critical repairs aimed at improving road infrastructure and enhancing safety for commuters along the busy expressway.
To ease movement and minimise disruption, the state government has provided alternative routes for motorists coming from the Abeokuta, Sango, or Tollgate axis towards Lagos or Oshodi.
Under the first diversion option, motorists will be redirected into the BRT corridor at Super Bus-Stop and exit at Pleasure Bus-Stop (Ilepo) to continue their journeys.
As a second option, drivers may divert through Ekoro Road to Old Otta Road via Alira Street, link Abeokuta Street, and reconnect at Pleasure Bus-Stop. Alternatively, motorists may pass through the Abule Egba Underbridge to Agege to access their desired destinations.
The government clarified that traffic on the Abeokuta-bound carriageway will remain open with through passage throughout the 12-week construction period.
Osiyemi further disclosed that emergency tow trucks have been strategically positioned along the corridor to ensure swift clearance of broken-down vehicles, particularly within the BRT corridor, in order to prevent gridlock.
He urged motorists to exercise patience, comply with traffic signage, and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed along the affected routes.
The state government assured residents that while the diversion may cause temporary inconvenience, the reconstruction project will ultimately deliver improved road conditions and a smoother commuting experience along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway corridor.
