… As Protests Enters Day 2 Over His Appointment
SAN FRANCISCO, June 09, (THEWILL) – Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the controversial former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, was Monday officially presented a letter by the Kano State Governor, Mr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, confirming his appointment as Emir of Kano.
The letter was presented to Sanusi at the Kano State Government House.
Just as the ceremony was ongoing, angry youths continued their protests on the streets ok Kano insisting that the deceased Emir’s first son, Alhaji Sanusi Ado Bayero, be installed as Emir as initially recommended by the Emirs Council.
Policemen had earlier sealed off the palace of the Emir of Kano after angry youths barricaded the entrance last night.
Governor Kwankwaso at the brief ceremony said he was grateful to God for making him part of the history.
He maintained that the immediate past CBN governor was appointed based on his sterling qualities and importantly, in view of his lineage as member of the royal family, as required by Kano traditions.
“Your appointment into the exalted position of Emir of Kano was guided by our collective and careful judgment of your ability, credibility and capability to provide the required purposeful leadership to enhance the Emirate Council at this crucial period of our history as a state and as a nation.
“The appointment of the Emir is not a political issue. However, we are aware that enemies of the state and of this government have politicised the appointment matter and disseminated misleading information in across section of the media, leading a political party to start congratulating one of the contenders for the exalted position, before the official announcement,” Kwankwaso said.
He explained that the committee of Kano King Makers presented a list of three nominees to the governmental required by law and tradition.
The governor said “after due consultation and consideration of all variables, the one destined by Allah to become Emir (Sanusi Lamido), was eventually selected.”
He however appealed to traditional leaders as well as the people of the state to accept the new Emir, who is the 14th in the Fulani dynasty of Kano, as the will of Allah and support him towards moving Kano forward.
The governor also warned those inciting youths to protest the appointment of the Emir to desist from doing so, saying it is not in the best interest of anybody in the state.
Kwankwaso advised Sanusi-Lamido, a grandson of the late Emir Sanusi Bayero, the 11th Emir of Kano under the Fulani dynasty, to be a father to all and to be just and fair in dealing with his subjects, as exemplified by his forefathers.
The governor, who also paid glowing tribute to late Emir Ado Bayero, said a befitting house has since been constructed for his family at Sharada area of Kano city, adding that government would do its best to ensure that they continue to live as comfortable as possible.
In his response, the new Emir promised to rule according to the tenets of Islam urging all other contenders for the throne and other members of the ruling family to, as a family, continue to live in peace and harmony. He also promised to carry everybody along to make his tenure
eventful.
The Emir expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for choosing him to rule Kano as the 14th Emir and thanked the governor, the Kano kingmakers and all others that made the appointment possible.
The ceremony was attended by the Kano King makers, namely, Madakin Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Nabahani Cigari Ibrahim, Makaman Kano, Alhaji Abdullahi Sarki Ibrahim, Sarkin Dawaki Maituta, Alhaji Bello Abubakar, the Sarkin Bai, Alhaji Mukhtari Adnan and the Senior Councilor of the Emirate Council, Wamban Kano Alhaji Abbas Sanusi.
Other at the presentation ceremony included the Walin Kano, Alhaji Mahe Bashir, Senator Kabiru Gaya and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Malam Nasir el-Rufa’i.
