July 13, (THEWILL) – LeBron James has officially announced his return for the upcoming 21st NBA season at the 2023 ESPYS Awards, held without a host for the first time in its 31-year history due to the Hollywood writers’ strike.
The star-studded event took place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, bringing together athletes from various sports to celebrate their achievements. Among the night’s highlights, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, emerged as the biggest winner, taking home awards for Best Athlete (Men’s Sports), Best NFL Player, and Best Team alongside the Chiefs. The Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award recognised Jrue Holiday of the Milwaukee Bucks and Lauren Holiday, a retired member of the United States Women’s National Team, as its deserving recipients.
The evening also featured captivating performances by Lil Wayne and H.E.R., with notable presenters such as Damar Hamlin, Dwayne Wade, Travis Kelce, Sue Bird, Mike Tyson, and Livvy Dunne gracing the stage.
Acknowledging his ESPY win for Best Record-Breaking Performance, which commemorated his surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time scoring record last season, James took the opportunity to speak about his future on the court. James was clear about his determination to play the game without compromising its integrity: “I don’t care about my point total or what I can or can’t do on the court. The true test for me is whether I can continue playing this game without cutting corners. The day I can no longer give my all on the court is the day I’ll retire. Fortunately, that day is not today.” With this declaration, James solidified his commitment to the Los Angeles Lakers for his 21st NBA season.
As James gears up for his next season, the Lakers recently welcomed Nigerian-American professional basketball standout, Gabe Vincent, to their ranks. Vincent, formerly with the Miami Heat, joins the team as James’ new teammate, adding further depth and talent to the Lakers’ roster.
