July 29, (THEWILL) – LeBron James, the celebrated basketball star, is set to add another prestigious accolade to his already illustrious career as he joins the esteemed group of Los Angeles Lakers legends with a jersey retirement ceremony at Crypto.com Arena.
Lakers governor Jeanie Buss, expressed unwavering certainty that James’ jersey will be hoisted into the rafters after his retirement and induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame. The Lakers, who have retired jerseys for 12 players, including the recent addition of Pau Gasol, eagerly await the momentous occasion to honour James’ remarkable contributions to the team and the sport.
In a recent interview, Buss affirmed the inevitability of retiring James’ number, given his upcoming Hall of Fame induction. The decision to retire either of James’ numbers, No. 23 or No. 6, remains uncertain. He initially donned No. 23 in his first three seasons with the Lakers before switching to No. 6.
However, Rich Paul, James’ agent, disclosed that the four-time NBA MVP would revert to No. 23 for the 2023 – 2024 season as a mark of respect for the late Bill Russell, whose No. 6 was permanently retired across the league. The possibility of retiring both numbers is a subject for future consideration.
Having completed his sixth year with the Lakers, James’ tenure with the team ranks as the second-longest with one franchise in his career, only behind his 11 seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Remarkably, James has achieved his highest scoring, assist, and rebound averages (27.4 points, 8.0 assists, and 8.1 rebounds per game, respectively) while wearing the Lakers’ purple and gold.
