December 16, (THEWILL) — Liverpool has made clear it will not provide Mohamed Salah with guarantees over playing time, despite the forward’s recent complaints about being dropped from the starting lineup.
The club remains determined to retain the Egyptian international beyond January.
Salah signed a contract worth more than £40 million over two years just months ago, but disappointing performances contributed to manager Arne Slot removing him from the starting XI for three consecutive matches.
Following the December 6 defeat to Leeds United, Salah told the media he had been thrown “under the bus” and suggested his previous eight years of service should place him above competing for his position.
Slot subsequently excluded him from the UEFA Champions League trip to Inter Milan before naming him on the bench against Brighton, though the matter remains unresolved with Salah now on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.
There have been reports that Liverpool “fully intend to keep Mo Salah” and want him to stay in January and beyond, noting the player remains under contract until summer 2027.
The club believes it demonstrated its commitment through the substantial contract offered last year, but any demands for specific playing guarantees will not be entertained.
Interest in Salah exists from Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad, whilst European sides have also expressed admiration, though Al Hilal are reportedly less keen.
The situation requires Salah to clarify his intentions, with unresolved questions about whether the player will present concrete proposals if he genuinely wishes to depart.
Liverpool anticipates conversations will take place regarding his future.
Despite the recent tensions, Liverpool expects Salah to remain at Anfield beyond January and for the foreseeable future as they seek a resolution that maintains their position on team selection whilst retaining one of their most significant players.
