Lookman Marks First Madrid Derby With Goal Despite Atletico’s Defeat

March 23, (THEWILL) — Ademola Lookman wrote his name into Madrid derby history on Sunday, scoring the opening goal at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, only for Real Madrid to come from behind and claim a 3-2 LaLiga victory over Atletico Madrid.

Lookman broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute, converting after Giuliano Simeone flicked the ball into his path. Real Madrid turned the match around in the second half, with Vinicius Junior netting from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute after David Hancko fouled Brahim Diaz. Federico Valverde added a second three minutes later, taking advantage of an error from substitute defender Jose Maria Gimenez.

Nahuel Molina drew Atletico level in the 66th minute with a long-range curler into the top-left corner, his second stunning strike in successive league outings. Vinicius quickly responded, however, finding the bottom-right corner after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s precise through ball restored Madrid’s lead.

Valverde received his marching orders for fouling Alex Baena, leaving the hosts to defend with 10 men. Atletico pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Julian Alvarez could only strike the post from range, and Real held on for the win.

The result moves Real Madrid to within four points of Barcelona at the top of the table, after the league leaders beat Rayo Vallecano 1-0 earlier on Sunday.
