May 04, (THEWILL) – Atalanta strengthened their grip on third place in Serie A with a dominant 4-0 victory over Monza on Sunday, confirming the home team’s relegation to Serie B. Ademola Lookman’s goal followed Charles De Ketelaere, who struck twice in the opening 23 minutes to put the visitors in command at the Stadio Brianteo.
The Belgian forward opened the scoring with an impressive solo effort, dribbling past two defenders before finishing calmly. His second goal came from capitalising on a defensive error by the struggling Monza side. Ademola Lookman extended the advantage just two minutes after half-time, shaking off his marker before finishing with precision using his left foot.
Monza nearly pulled a goal back when Omari Forson’s diving header was spectacularly saved on the line by Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi. The home team’s fate was sealed when Marco Brescianini added a fourth goal for the visitors with two minutes remaining in the match.
The defeat leaves Monza at the bottom of Serie A, now mathematically certain to go down as they sit 12 points behind 17th-placed Lecce with only three matches left to play. Atalanta now hold 68 points with three fixtures remaining, establishing a five-point cushion over fourth-placed Lazio (63 points) and a six-point advantage over Juventus (62 points), who were scheduled to face Bologna later on Sunday.
