June 04, (THEWILL) – Imo State Governor, Sen Hope Uzodinma, has been advised to upgrade the Nekede Zoological Garden and Wildlife, which has apparently been overtaken by grass.
A parent, Mr Nkwachukwu Ugorji, who was sighted at the Nekede Zoological Garden with his wife and five children, in an interview with THEWILL, expressed worry that the only surviving State- owned tourist centre was no longer functional.
He urged Governor Uzodinma to lift the Zoo to greater heights in order to attract tourists to the State.
A middle-aged woman, Elizabeth Kalu, thanked Governor Hope Uzodinma for the ongoing rehabilitation of the Nekede old road, which according to her, had been in a deplorable state for a long time; and therefore, pleaded with him to ensure the Zoo is given the needed facelift.
“My children always disturb me to take them to the Zoo to see animals. We went there last week, but to my greatest surprise, the security at gate told us the Zoo was no longer functioning. The Governor should rebuild it for the sake of our children”, she pleaded.
When contacted, the Commissioner for Tourism, Barr. Jerry Egbema, said the present administration will relocate the Zoo to another area which he did not disclose.
“You know, the present place the Zoo is situated was bushy before the the buildings were built. They are now old-fashioned.”
