December 06, (THEWILL) — Manchester City closed the gap on English Premier League leaders, Arsenal, to just two points following a comfortable 3-0 victory over Sunderland on Saturday. The result came after Arsenal suffered a 2-1 loss at Aston Villa earlier in the day, allowing City to capitalise and move closer to the top of the table.
City dominated the first half with centre-backs Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol both finding the net within four minutes. Dias opened the scoring in the 31st minute when his powerful 25-yard effort deflected off Dan Ballard and into the goal. Gvardiol doubled the advantage moments later, meeting Phil Foden’s in-swinging corner with a downward header.
Sunderland emerged strongly after the interval and created genuine chances to reduce the deficit. Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Wilson Isidor in a one-on-one situation after Dias made an error, whilst Granit Xhaka struck the post with a well-executed half-volley. However, their momentum faded when Foden added a third goal in the 65th minute.
The third goal came courtesy of Rayan Cherki’s exceptional creativity on the right flank. The midfielder sat Omar Alderete down before delivering a stunning rabona cross that Foden headed against the crossbar before the ball crossed the line. The moment proved to be one of the standout assists of the campaign.
Sunderland’s afternoon worsened further when substitute Luke O’Nien received a straight red card five minutes into stoppage time for a dangerous challenge on Matheus Nunes. O’Nien, who had only entered the match in the 88th minute, will miss the Tyne-Wear derby against Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light next weekend, the first such fixture in the EPL since 2016.
