April 25, (THEWILL) — For the fourth year in succession, Manchester City will contest the FA Cup final after beating Southampton 2-1 in a dramatic semi-final at Wembley on Saturday.
The opening period was largely uneventful. Leo Scienza appeared to hand Southampton the lead in the 12th minute, only for the linesman to cut short his celebrations with an offside flag. Goalkeeper Daniel Peretz then kept the Saints level before the break by turning away an Omar Marmoush effort at the near post.
City exerted sustained pressure after half-time. Tijjani Reijnders curled narrowly wide, Marmoush shot over from close range, and Savinho forced Peretz into action, yet the English Premier League club could not convert despite three attempts within six seconds.
Southampton capitalised on City’s profligacy. Finn Azaz curled a composed long-range finish into the far corner in the 79th minute to put the Saints ahead. Three minutes later, Jerome Doku’s strike took a deflection off James Bree and crept past Peretz to restore parity.
Nico Gonzalez then won the tie outright in the 87th minute, rifling a long-range effort into the top corner. Savinho might have added a third in the closing stages, only for his shot to be cleared off the line.
