December 18, (THEWILL) — Manchester City reached the EFL Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 victory over Brentford on Wednesday. Goals from Rayan Cherki and Savinho in each half sent Pep Guardiola’s side through at the expense of their London opponents.
The opening 15 minutes saw Oscar Bobb register the first attempt on target, cutting inside Rico Henry before Hakon Valdimarsson collected his weak shot.
Abdukodir Khusanov then escaped with a yellow card from referee Samuel Barrott despite fouling Kevin Schade when the last man. Bobb’s subsequent injury brought a temporary halt before Mathias Jensen forced James Trafford into action with a 20th-minute free-kick.
Cherki delivered the breakthrough in the 32nd minute with an outstanding individual goal.
The in-form forward manoeuvred past Mikkel Damsgaard on the penalty area’s edge before bending a right-footed shot into the net’s roof. The strike extended his recent goalscoring run and gave City control heading into half-time.
Brentford emerged with renewed energy after the interval. Kristoffer Ajer and Michael Kayode both tested Trafford, while Phil Foden drew an excellent save from Valdimarsson with a quick snapshot.
The visitors’ pressure, however, failed to produce an equaliser.
Savinho wrapped up the tie 23 minutes from time with his second goal of the campaign.
His shot struck the sliding Ajer and looped over the helpless Valdimarsson, confirming City’s progression. The deflection proved fortunate but effective in settling the contest.
