April 19, (THEWILL) — Manchester United climbed closer to a top-five English Premier League finish on Saturday with a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, leaving Chelsea mired in their worst league run of the season.
Matheus Cunha delivered the only goal shortly before the interval, converting a Bruno Fernandes ball into the box. The finish was Cunha’s fifth EPL goal against Chelsea, more than he has scored against any other opponent, and the assist was Fernandes’ 18th in the league this season.
Enzo Fernandez, back in action after a club-enforced suspension, provided Chelsea’s most dangerous moment around the half-hour mark. The Fernandes delivery that broke the deadlock came against the run of play, the United captain manoeuvring past Alejandro Garnacho, a former United winger, before supplying the pass from which Cunha finished.
Chelsea applied sustained pressure after the break, producing 15 shots in the second half alone. Only one of those troubled the goalkeeper, with Liam Delap and Wesley Fofana both denied by the woodwork and Moises Caicedo, who put pen to paper on a new contract at the club earlier in the week, dragging a late effort just wide.
United’s threadbare defence absorbed everything Chelsea offered and held firm to complete the victory. The defeat was the Blues’ fourth in succession in the Premier League, a sequence that shows no sign of ending.
