November 29, (THEWILL) – Manchester United’s chances of progressing to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League, were left hanging by a thread last night, after a thrilling but ultimately disappointing 3-3 draw away to Turkish side Galatasaray.
Playing in front of a raucous crowd at the Türk Telekom Stadium in Istanbul, Erik ten Hag’s men got off to a perfect start, racing into a 2-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes thanks to goals from talented young winger, Alejandro Garnacho and Portuguese playmaker, Bruno Fernandes. However, slack defending allowed Galatasaray back into the match, with Hakim Ziyech netting either side of Scott McTominay’s 55th minute strike to peg the score back to 3-2.
As United tired in the closing stages, more lacklustre work at the back saw them concede a crushing equaliser to substitute Kerem Aktürkoğlu in the 71st minute. Despite late chances for Fernandes and Facundo Pellistri, the Red Devils were unable to find a winner.
The 3-3 result leaves United with just four points after five of their six group stage fixtures. With Bayern Munich and FC Copenhagen meeting later tonight, an unlikely victory for the Danish minnows will eliminate Ten Hag’s men from contention for the UCL last 16.
For a club of Manchester United’s stature and resources, such an early European exit would be nothing short of disastrous- heaping yet more pressure on the rebuilding job facing their Dutch manager. After showing some progress in recent English Premier League wins over Fulham, Luton and Everton, this result once more highlights the ongoing fragility in United’s play.
