Manuel Pellegrini admits it was a “risk” for Manchester City to break their transfer record for Kevin De Bruyne.
City paid Wolfsburg £54.9m for the Belgium international in August – the second highest fee ever spent by a British club.
De Bruyne spent two years with Chelsea between 2012 and 2014, and has hit the ground running on his return to the Premier League, scoring nine goals in 19 appearances for City.
Despite conceding they took a gamble by signing the 24-year-old, Pellegrini says he was always confident De Bruyne would fit into his philosophy.
“Maybe it was a risk to pay the amount of money for Kevin. He was here before in the Premier League, but we were so sure that in the style that we play, he would be successful,” he told Good Morning Sports Fans on Sky Sports News HQ.
“You never know if a player is a very expensive player or a cheap player. It will depend on how the season develops.
“If you don’t win any silverware, maybe you will receive a lot of criticism about the players that you bought.”
