SAN FRANCISCO, July 15, (THEWILL) – Marcus Rashford was involved in a high-profile campaign for free school meals which led to a change in government policy.
The Manchester United and England striker will get an honorary doctorate from the University of Manchester as a recognition for his effort in ending child hunger and child poverty.
According to reports, the award is “for his remarkable campaign against child poverty off the field and outstanding sporting achievements on the pitch”. It is also the highest honour the university can bestow an individual.
THEWILL had previously reported how the striker was instrumental in the change of government policy, campaigning for free school meals in England to be extended.
Speaking about the award, the youngster said he is elated about the development.

He said: “It’s a proud day for myself and my family. When you look at the great names that have been awarded this doctorate in the past, it’s humbling.
“We still have a long way to go in the fight to combat child poverty in this country but receiving recognition from your city means we are heading in the right direction and that means a lot.”
THEWILL reports that the 22 year-old footballer is the youngest to receive the award at the university, joining Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton on the list of those who have received one.
