August 13, (THEWILL) — The Akwa Ibom State Marine Police has arrested two suspects for illegal oil bunkering and economic sabotage following the interception of a large wooden boat laden with petroleum products.
The operation was carried out on August 2, 2025, at about 5:30 a.m., along the Okposo waterway in Mbo Local Government Area of the state.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the operation followed credible intelligence that a boat suspected of transporting stolen crude oil was moving towards the maritime border between Nigeria and the Republic of Cameroon. Acting swiftly, the Marine Police deployed two gunboats to the location, where the vessel was intercepted.
Preliminary findings indicate that the petroleum products onboard were likely stolen from the weir head of an oil pipeline in the area and Marine Police said the interception prevented the illicit cargo from crossing international waters.
“The suspects were arrested in possession of petroleum products without lawful authority, an act considered both illegal and a form of economic sabotage”, the statement read in part.
The police assured that the matter would be thoroughly investigated to identify the source of the stolen products and possible accomplices.
THEWILL reports that illegal oil bunkering has been a persistent challenge in Nigeria’s coastal communities, leading to significant economic losses, environmental degradation, and security threats and Akwa Ibom, with its strategic position along the Atlantic coastline, has often been a hotspot for such illicit activities.
The police reiterated their commitment to working with other security agencies and local communities to curb maritime crimes.
“Our marine patrols will remain vigilant to protect Nigeria’s economic interests and ensure the safety of our waterways”, DSP John stated.
The suspects are currently in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command urged residents to provide timely information that could aid security agencies in combating oil theft and related crimes.
