May 01, (THEWILL) — Governor Hyacinth Alia has commended workers in the state and country on the occasion of the 2026 Workers’ Day celebrations.
The Governor described the 2026 May Day as an opportunity to celebrate Benue workers and highlight their importance in his administration’s efforts to transform the state and impact the lives of the people positively.
He commended the entire state workforce for their immense contributions, which he added have transformed key sectors, describing them as important stakeholders in the implementation of his administration’s seven-point development plan.
These include security of lives and property; agriculture and rural development; commerce and industry; human capital and social development; infrastructure and environment; information & communications technology; political and economic governance.
Describing workers’ welfare as a necessity for better performance, the governor assured that his administration will continue to accord the welfare of the workers in the state a major priority, implement friendly policies that will enhance their welfare and boost their capacity.
He praises the labour Unions in Benue for their cooperation and support, which he said has enhanced workers’ productivity, and wishes them a memorable celebration.
Earlier, the Joint speech by NLC and TUC Chairmen in Benue State, read by Comrade Terungwa Igbe, appreciated the efforts of Governor Hyacinth Alia for his laudable labour-friendly policies and programmes of his administration, which have positively affected the lives and welfare of Benue workers.
He listed Workers Welfare Projects such as prompt payment of salaries, pension to pensioners, payment of terminal benefits to deserving workers/retirees and implementation of the New National Minimum Wage in the State and Substantial payment of salary arrears owed Benue workers from the past administration, among others.
The State NLC chairman, however, appealed to the governor to address the payment of the balance of two months of salary arrears owed to state workers, and improve the payment of salary arrears owed to local government workers and teachers in the state.
He also called for an enhancement in the monthly take-home of pensioners and equally appealed for the conversion/granting of permanent and pensionable appointments to thousands of casual workers in government offices and establishments in the state.
