April 21, (THEWILL) — Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior gave Real Madrid a 2-1 victory over Alaves at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday, ending a two-match winless run in LaLiga.
Alaves began brightly, with Toni Martinez’s low drive forcing Andrii Lunin into an early save, but the hosts gradually gained control.
Mbappe broke the deadlock in the 30th minute when his effort from the edge of the area deflected off Jonny and left goalkeeper Antonio Sivera wrong-footed.
The Frenchman went close to a second three minutes before the break but skewed Vinicius’ cutback wide, and Martinez came close to equalising when his instinctive flick struck the woodwork in first-half stoppage time.
Madrid extended their advantage five minutes after the interval. Vinicius collected possession, advanced on goal, and drove a powerful strike that bounced past Sivera into the bottom-left corner.
Brahim Diaz then saw a curling effort cleared off the line by Nahuel Tenaglia, while a combination of Mbappe and Vinicius could not convert Dani Carvajal’s cross.
Alaves grew into the contest in the closing stages, with Victor Parada’s diving header hitting the base of the post.
The visitors eventually found the net in the third minute of added time when Martinez flicked Antonio Blanco’s effort into the goal to reduce the deficit.
The result ended Madrid’s winless streak, but the gap at the top of the LaLiga table remains significant. They trail leaders Barcelona by six points, having also played one game more.
