April 08, (THEWILL) – Rory McIlroy’s quest for a career Grand Slam at the Masters ended on Saturday, after he failed to make the cut.
Despite being one of the pre-tournament favourites, the Northern Irishman’s fate was sealed after he signed for a five-over 77 in the second round, leaving him at five-over for the tournament. McIlroy has now missed the cut in two of his last three visits to Augusta National.
McIlroy is a four-time major champion and has been seeking a Masters win to join the exclusive club of players, who have achieved a career Grand Slam. However, it has been almost nine years since his 2014 Open victory, and his chances this year ended with his early exit from the Masters.
Alongside McIlroy, six members of the LIV Golf circuit also failed to make the cut, including major winners, Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia and Bubba Watson. However, while McIlroy’s Masters journey ended, Tiger Woods managed to make the cut by the skin of his teeth, finishing right on the cut line.
Woods bogeyed the closing hole but tied the record for the most consecutive cuts made at the Masters with 23, alongside Gary Player and Fred Couples. Brooks Koepka leads the field heading into the third round, with 10 members of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series reaching the weekend.
