June 25, (THEWILL) – US Soccer has confirmed that midfielder Weston McKennie and defender Sergino Dest will serve their suspensions during the Gold Cup matches.
This comes as part of the disciplinary action imposed on the pair of the United States men’s national team squad players for their involvement in an altercation during the Nations League semi-final against Mexico. As THEWILL reported, the suspensions were issued by CONCACAF, the governing body for soccer in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.
McKennie and Dest were both handed suspensions of three matches, which include the standard one-match ban for receiving a red card. Meanwhile, Mexico’s Cesar Montes and Gerardo Arteaga also received suspensions, with Montes serving a four-match ban and Arteaga facing a three-match suspension. While Montes and Arteaga are part of Mexico’s roster for the Gold Cup, McKennie and Dest are not included in the United States squad.
The United States began their Gold Cup campaign on Saturday, against Jamaica, with McKennie and Dest unsurprisingly absent from the team. Mexico, on the other hand, commenced their tournament against Honduras on Sunday, with Montes and Arteaga available for selection.
The suspensions of McKennie and Dest serve as a reminder of the disciplinary consequences for on-field player misconduct, highlighting the need for players to adhere to fair play and sportsmanship during international competitions.
