SAN FRANCISCO, July 01, (THEWILL) – A team of surgeons at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, have successfully constructed a new bladder, otherwise called neobladder reconstruction for an 18-year-old cancer patient.
Saidu Ibrahim, a student of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi, was diagnosed of having malignant cells in the tissues of his bladder with a five-year history of passing blood in his urine as a result of the cancer of the bladder.
However, Nigerian surgeons at the university hospital, led by Haruna Liman, carried out a procedure that led to the removal of the bladder, and constructed a new bladder to save Ibrahim’s life.
The team carried out a procedure to control the tumour from spreading and increase his chance of survival, which was achieved; before removing the bladder and constructing a new bladder for him because there is no cure for cancer.
