February 20, (THEWILL) – Liverpool manager Arne Slot faces a potential suspension after accepting a charge from the Football Association (FA) following his red card during the recent Merseyside derby. The Dutch manager, along with assistant Sipke Hulshoff and the club itself, submitted their acceptance of the charges before Wednesday’s deadline.
An independent regulatory commission will now determine the appropriate sanctions for the incident, which occurred on 12 February. Both Slot and Hulshoff were sent off for protesting to referee Michael Oliver after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Everton. The FA charged the coaching duo with allegedly using “improper, insulting and abusive” language towards match officials.
The February derby, which marked the final such contest at Goodison Park, ended in controversy when Everton captain James Tarkowski scored an equaliser in the eighth minute of stoppage time. Post-match celebrations by Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucouré near Liverpool supporters sparked confrontations between players, leading to red cards for both Doucouré and Liverpool’s Curtis Jones.
This is Slot’s second disciplinary issue this season. He previously served a one-match touchline ban in December during a Carabao Cup victory over Southampton. FA guidelines allow prior incidents to be considered when determining penalties, which could result in a more severe sanction for the Liverpool manager.
Despite these disciplinary challenges, Slot has enjoyed remarkable success since replacing Jürgen Klopp last summer. He has guided Liverpool to 18 wins in 26 English Premier League matches, with just one defeat. His team currently holds an eight-point lead at the top of the table and has advanced to the Carabao Cup final after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 on aggregate.
