March 29, (THEWILL) — United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) has averted a potential mid-air safety risk after one of its Airbus A320 aircraft experienced a bird strike, prompting the airline to swiftly withdraw the plane from service and activate precautionary safety protocols.
The airline disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday by its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Chibuike Uloka, who reassured passengers and the general public of the carrier’s unwavering commitment to safety.
According to Uloka, the incident occurred during Flight UN0509, which was scheduled to operate from Asaba International Airport to Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at noon.
He explained that, in line with strict aviation safety standards, the aircraft involved in the incident has been grounded to allow for a comprehensive inspection before it can safely return to operation.
“In adherence to our strict and uncompromising safety standards, the affected aircraft has been withdrawn from service for comprehensive inspection before returning to operations,” Uloka stated.
The airline noted that the development has led to some disruptions across its flight network, with certain scheduled services unable to operate as planned. However, it emphasised that the decision underscores its safety-first approach.
“United Nigeria Airlines remains committed to upholding the highest safety standards,” he added.
Uloka expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers, appealing for their understanding as the airline works to restore normalcy.
“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this unforeseen development may cause to your travel plans and kindly appeal for the understanding and patience of our valued passengers and the general public,” he said.
He further assured that the airline’s operations team is working diligently to minimise the impact of the disruption while providing necessary support and assistance to affected travellers.
