August 29, (THEWILL) — José Mourinho has departed his role at Fenerbahce following a single campaign with the Turkish giants. The Portuguese manager took charge of the Istanbul outfit in 2024 but was unable to deliver the success that supporters craved.
Under Mourinho’s guidance, Fenerbahce finished runners-up in the Turkish Super Lig, trailing the champions, Galatasaray, by 11 points. The club’s European campaigns proved disappointing, with elimination from the Turkish Cup at the quarterfinal stage and a round-of-16 exit to Rangers in the UEFA Europa League.
The final blow came with their recent UEFA Champions League playoff defeat to Benfica, which condemned them to another Europa League campaign. Fenerbahce have managed four points from their opening two league fixtures this term and face Genclerbirligi away on Sunday.
The 62-year-old’s tenure yielded 37 victories from 62 matches, representing a win rate of 59.7 percent. The club has not claimed the Turkish Super Lig title since 2014, with their 2023 Turkish Cup triumph marking their sole major honour of the past decade.
The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United boss previously stated his readiness to return to the Premier League upon leaving Turkey. His illustrious career includes 26 major trophies, UCL success with Porto and Inter Milan, as well as European silverware with Roma in 2022. The untenable position of United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, makes this news of Mourinho’s availability likely to begin rumours, given the latter’s readiness for another stint in the EPL.
