SAN FRANCISCO, January 22, (THEWILL) – Mobile telecommunications company, MTN Group, has asked for an out-of-court settlement in a suit it filed against the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, for imposing N1.04trn fine on its Nigerian subsidiary, MTN Nigeria, for failing to disconnect about 5.1 million unregistered SIM cards.
Chief Wole Olanipekun SAN, who led a powerful team of MTN lawyers made up of seven Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SANs, to the court, told the Presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, that their client has opted to settle out of court with the Nigerian government.
Consequent upon this request, the Presiding Judge adjourned the matter till the March 18, 2016 by which time the two parties are expected to come back with their mutually-agreed decision on the matter, Technology Times reports.
This decision to settle out of court comes as a dramatic anticlimax and major u-turn by MTN which took everyone by storm when it instituted a legal action against the Nigerian telecom industry regulator at a time the over N1trn penalty had been slashed by 25 per cent to N780bn.
