December 13, (THEWILL) — The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) has clarified reports surrounding the alleged mysterious disappearance of Cadet Stephen Kubama Gani, stating that the cadet was absent from the Academy without official permission and that due procedures were followed.
In a statement issued by the Academy’s Public Relations Officer, Major Reuben Kovangiya, the NDA explained that Cadet Gani was admitted into the institution as a member of the 76 Regular Course and reported for training on August 26, 2024.
According to the statement, his training progressed without any reported challenges until April 28, 2025, when he absented himself from the Academy without authorisation.
The Academy said that in line with established military laws, procedures and extant regulations guiding cadet administration, the cadet’s parents were formally notified three days after his absence was confirmed. Seven days after the incident, and following due administrative processes, Cadet Gani was struck off strength.
The NDA further disclosed that feedback later received from the cadet’s parents indicated that his whereabouts could not be ascertained, prompting the Academy to initiate renewed investigative procedures, which are currently ongoing.
Reiterating its commitment to transparency and accountability, the NDA urged the public to disregard claims suggesting that the institution failed to act or was indifferent to the cadet’s absence. It stressed that the training and administration of cadets are strictly governed by military laws, procedures and long-standing traditions as outlined in its Code of Conduct.
While assuring that it continues to engage all relevant stakeholders to ensure a positive outcome, the Academy reaffirmed that the safety and wellbeing of its cadets remain a top priority. It added that adequate structures, including regular stop checks and physical inspections, are in place to ensure all cadets are properly accounted for.
