BEVERLY HILLS, June 11, (THEWILL) – Elections for the seat of President of the Senate for the 9th National Assembly is on going.
There are two main contenders, Ahmed Lawan and Ali Ndume. Both are members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The APC had endorsed Lawan as it’s candidate and urged its lawmakers to ensure party supremacy.
However, Ndume insisted on running and has the backing of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Curiously, Ndume was nominated and seconded by PDP senators.
At the inauguration on Tuesday, 107 Senators were present.
APC has 62 Senators present. PDP has 44 Senators while the Young Progressive Party (YPP) has 1 Senator in the person of Ifeanyi Ubah.
There are two vacant seats (Imo North and Imo West).
Thus, if party supremacy succedes, Lawan should win by a simple majority.
If Ndume wins, then the PDP has for the second time played a fast one on the APC with collaboration from APC lawmakers.
