March 28, (THEWILL) – The National Basketball Association (NBA) is exploring the creation of a groundbreaking professional basketball league in Europe, following strategic discussions with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced the potential expansion on Thursday, signalling a significant move in international basketball development for 2025.
During a press conference in New York, Silver revealed preliminary plans for a European league comprising 16 teams, with 12 permanent franchises and four clubs subject to annual rotation.
“We have discussed potential opportunities in Europe for decades, but now is the time to move to the next stage,” Silver stated.
Media reports suggest that prominent football clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and Fenerbahce, have been approached about potential involvement.
The proposed league structure would see team ownership split equally between the NBA and external investors, with estimated team entry costs exceeding $500 million per franchise.
FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis confirmed ongoing conversations with potential stakeholders, noting that establishing connections with clubs remains a primary objective.
The proposed league represents a direct challenge to the EuroLeague, currently recognised as the second-most competitive basketball league globally after the NBA.
Silver emphasised transparency in the process, stating, “We wanted to have open and direct conversations with stakeholders, not secret discussions.” While details remain fluid, further developments are expected in the coming months.
