January 14, (THEWILL) — The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to conduct an independent review of competition in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector amid concerns over market dominance by some operators.
The assessment will examine market concentration, identify operators with significant market power, and evaluate whether existing regulations adequately promote fair competition. The NCC stated that the exercise aims to strengthen transparency, protect consumers, and ensure a level playing field for all industry players.
Findings from the PwC-led review are expected to guide future regulatory actions, including possible competition remedies or policy adjustments. The NCC emphasised that the initiative is not intended to punish successful operators, but to prevent abuse of dominance and support sustainable industry growth.
The telecom sector is a key driver of Nigeria’s digital economy, making the outcome of the review critical for operators, consumers, and investors alike.
