February 10, (THEWILL) — Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have dismantled a notorious drug enclave at Ama Hausa, Bonny Island, Rivers State, arresting six suspects and seizing a significant haul of illicit drugs, including cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, skunk, and tramadol.
A statement signed on Tuesday by the NDLEA Spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, said the operation, conducted on Friday, February 6, 2026, took a tragic turn when Chief Narcotic Agent, Sadiq Bako Mujahid, sustained fatal head injuries.
The statement revealed that the injuries were inflicted when the gang leader, Genesis George Benson, mobilised armed hoodlums to resist arrest. Mujahid was rushed to Bonny Island General Hospital, but sadly succumbed to his injuries.
Despite the violent attack, NDLEA operatives apprehended all six targets, including Benson, who has been identified as the orchestrator of the attack. The other suspects arrested during the strategic operation include ThankGod Okon, Shamsudden Isah, Muhammed Musa, Adamu Muhammed, and Muhammed Yusuf.
Reacting to the incident, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), lauded the bravery and resilience of the officers. “I salute the gallantry of our men who refused to be intimidated by these criminal elements. Even after the cowardly attack on Mujahid, our operatives ensured that the assailants were overpowered and arrested, and their illicit substances confiscated. Their sacrifice will not be in vain”, Marwa said.
He described Mujahid as a disciplined and courageous officer who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation, extending condolences to his family, colleagues, and the Rivers State Command.
Marwa further warned that any attack on NDLEA officers is an attack on the state itself, pledging that the agency will remain resolute in its mission to eliminate illicit drugs from Nigeria. “We will continue to take the fight to the enclaves of these merchants of death”, he added.
