April 07, (THEWILL) — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken a decisive step to reclaim its leadership and reaffirm its commitment to democracy, as a new faction emerged to officially dissociate the party from the coalitions led by Senator David Mark and Nafiu Bala.
The announcement came at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, where the State Chairmen Forum of ADC formally rejected the two factions, describing them as attempts to “hijack” the party from its bona fide members.
Don Norman Obinna, chairman of ADC in Abia and spokesperson for the forum, emphasized that all actions taken by these groups in the name of the ADC are null and not binding on the party.
Obinna commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its decision to withdraw recognition from the Mark and Bala factions, following an interim ruling by the Court of Appeal.
He stressed that the ADC remains a party for all Nigerians, not just former political office holders or elites, asserting that the party is “not for sale.”
Addressing the purported expulsion of Dumebi Kachikwu, the party’s former presidential candidate, Obinna declared that Kachikwu remains a committed and bona fide member of the ADC.
He described the expulsion as “an act of desperation taken too far” by the Mark-led faction.
“We disassociate the ADC from David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, Bolaji Abdullahi, Prof. Osunbor, and all members of the so-called coalition who attempted to hijack our party,.
“We also disassociate the ADC from the claims of Nafiu Gombe and firmly state that he has never held the position of Deputy Chairman of the ADC,” Obinna said.
The forum announced the formation of an interim committee to oversee the party’s affairs pending a national convention. Members of the committee include Ogga Kingsley (acting chairman), Odion Kennedy (secretary), Muhammad Jidda (deputy chairman), Kabiru Hussaini (assistant secretary), Charles Omidji (national organizing secretary), Johnny Derek (deputy organizing secretary), Stella Chukwuma (treasurer), Obinna (publicity secretary), and Samuel Gyang (financial secretary).
