BEVERLY HILLS, August 08, (THEWILL) – Nigeria Friday confirmed two new Ebola cases in Lagos, Africa’s largest city. The confirmation increases the number of persons so far infected to nine since Patrick Sawyer, the infected Liberian/American man arrived Lagos with the virus. Sawyer died three days after his arrival inside an isolated unit of a Lagos hospital.
The Ebola epidemic has killed almost 1000 people and infected about 1, 800 in West Africa since its outbreak, making it the worst outbreak in the world since the WHO started treacking the disease.
Global health experts on Friday declared the epidemic an international health emergency that requires a coordinated global approach. Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone have been worst hit.
“The possible consequences of further international spread are particularly serious in view of the virulence of the virus, the intensive community and health facility transmission patterns, and the weak health systems in the currently affected and most at-risk countries,” the WHO said Friday after two days of emergency meetings.
