SAN FRANCISCO, November 30, (THEWILL) – Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru, 66, Nigeria’s former Foreign Affairs Minister, who served under President Goodluck Jonathan from 2011 to 2013, has died inside a South African hospital where he was receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment.

Family sources told THEWILL that the career diplomat, who hailed from Ogun State, had been in the hospital since September following the ailment.

Ashiru was credited with laying the framework that saw the election of Nigeria as a non-permanent member of the UN security seat in 2013.

News reports speculated that he was dropped as Minister following President Jonathan’s quarrel with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who facilitated his appointment as Minister.
