BEVERLY HILLS, November 08, (THEWILL) –The Nigerian military on Saturday released dozens of persons in Maiduguri, Borno State, northern Nigeria, detained over their suspected links with the terrorist group Boko Haram.
The army said it released One hundred and twenty five (125) detainees, two days after setting free 42 other detainees, which it said have no ties with the Boko Haram.
All the detainees were released to the Borno State Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima.
The spokesman of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, Col. Sani Usman, said those freed were from the 254 persons it incepted fleeing Biu, a town in Borno State, on September 23 during a military assault on Boko Haram strongholds.
He said they were freed after extensive investigations, adding that others were still being held and would be prosecuted according to the law if they are guilty of terrorism.
Shettima, while receiving the detainees, said their release would go a long way in building trust between the military and residents in the state.
He said the released detainees looked well and credited the military for their wellbeing.
“It shows that the military are core professionals and know how to go about their duties,” Shettima said.
