January 20, (THEWILL) – In a significant development for African sports, Nigeria has obtained the rights to host the 2026 Commonwealth Senior and Veterans Fencing Championships, surpassing Australia’s bid.
The announcement follows Nigeria’s successful organisation of the 2024 Fencing World Cup, marking its position as the first Sub-Saharan African nation to conduct such an event.
The Commonwealth Fencing Federation has approved Nigeria’s proposal with specific requirements that need fulfilment before the tournament commences in 2026.
The competition anticipates participation from more than 600 athletes representing over 30 countries, making it potentially one of the largest sporting events in Nigerian history.
Nigeria Fencing Federation President Adeyinka Samuel stated: “We competed against Australia, a nation that has hosted the Commonwealth Championships three times and is among the most experienced globally.
This achievement reflects the strength of our bid and Nigeria’s growing respect on the international stage.” The selection process involved extensive evaluation spanning 10 months, culminating in a final technical assessment during the World Cup in December 2024.
The recent Fencing World Cup at Charterhouse Lagos demonstrated Nigeria’s organisational capabilities, featuring 39 competitors from eight nations.
British Fencing President Pat Aiyenuro offered positive feedback, noting, “I am impressed. The venue is amazing; the organisation and refereeing were impressive.
“We are privileged to have some of the top fencing nations here, including a world champion, which shows their confidence in Nigeria’s ability to host a top-tier competition.”
The sport of fencing encompasses three distinct disciplines – foil, épée, and sabre – each utilising its specific blade type and rule set.
This upcoming championship represents a milestone for African fencing, positioning Nigeria as the first nation on the continent to host this prestigious Commonwealth event.
