December 17, (THEWILL) — Nigeria has been re-elected to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Public Key Directory (PKD) Board for a sixth consecutive term, reinforcing the country’s role in advancing global aviation security and secure digital travel systems.
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) disclosed this in a statement signed on Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, ACI A.S. Akinlabi. The re-election took place on Thursday, December 11, 2025, during the 31st ICAO-PKD Board Meeting held in Montreal, Canada.
Nigeria emerged among 15 board members selected from 107 participating states.
According to the statement, the Comptroller-General of the NIS, Kemi Nandap, who led Nigeria’s delegation to the meeting, attributed the re-election to the country’s consistent contributions and technical expertise in Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), electronic Machine-Readable Travel Document (eMRTD) verification and digital identity harmonisation.
Nigeria has been an active member of the ICAO-PKD since 2009 and has played a key role in the directory’s strategic development and modernisation.
The NIS said the latest re-election reflects Nigeria’s compliance with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices, as well as its sustained commitment to secure and interoperable travel documentation.
The Service noted that the development aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in meeting Nigeria’s international obligations and sustaining active participation in global aviation and security frameworks.
The NIS reaffirmed its commitment to upholding high standards of border security, advancing digital identity initiatives and safeguarding the integrity of travel documents issued to Nigerians and residents
