Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment To Economic Stability At U.S.–Nigeria Business Roundtable

December 17, (THEWILL) — Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to macroeconomic stability, policy credibility, and market-driven reforms as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Olayemi Cardoso, engaged senior U.S. business leaders and institutional investors at the U.S.–Nigeria Executive Business Roundtable held in Washington, D.C., on Monday, December 15, 2025.

Speaking against the backdrop of heightened global economic uncertainty and tightening financial conditions, Cardoso assured investors that Nigeria remains firmly committed to rules-based economic management, transparent markets, and predictable policy frameworks designed to restore confidence and attract long-term capital inflows.

The CBN governor highlighted recent reforms in Nigeria’s foreign-exchange market, noting that efforts to improve price discovery, deepen liquidity, and eliminate distortions are central to restoring market confidence. He also pointed to the adoption of orthodox monetary policy measures aimed at anchoring inflation expectations, alongside ongoing banking-sector reforms intended to strengthen financial stability and resilience.

Cardoso further emphasised the modernisation of Nigeria’s payments system as a critical enabler of financial inclusion and efficiency, positioning the country to better support private-sector-led growth and innovation across key sectors of the economy.

The roundtable, convened by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s U.S.-Africa Business Centre, provided a platform for candid discussions on macroeconomic stabilisation, regulatory clarity, and strategies to scale bankable projects in priority sectors such as energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, agriculture, and technology. Participants also explored ways to deepen commercial and investment ties between Nigeria and the United States.

Commenting on the engagement, Ms Kendra Gaither, President of the U.S.-Africa Business Centre at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said investors are increasingly prioritising policy credibility and consistency when allocating capital in emerging markets.

“What investors are responding to today is clarity, clear rules, credible reforms, and a seriousness of purpose”, Gaither said. “Nigeria’s message is increasingly one of discipline and opportunity, and that matters in a global economy actively searching for stability and predictability.”

The CBN said the engagement forms part of broader efforts by Nigerian authorities to strengthen international investor relations, communicate reform progress, and position the country as a more attractive destination for sustainable foreign investment.
