August 27, (THEWILL) — Nigeria has secured a $1m flood relief grant from the People’s Republic of China to support emergency response and recovery efforts in states affected by recent flooding.
The grant was formalised on Wednesday through the signing of an Exchange of Notes at the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Abuja. The ceremony had the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, representing Nigeria, while China’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, signed on behalf of his country.
Bagudu described the intervention as timely, noting that the assistance will be channelled to communities in Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Borno, Taraba, and Adamawa states, which have been among the worst-hit by floods.
“The gesture reflects the long-standing bilateral relations between the two countries, built on mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared vision for sustainable development,” he said.
He added that the funds would complement government’s efforts in providing relief materials and rebuilding livelihoods.
The minister assured that his ministry, working with relevant agencies, would ensure transparent and effective implementation through a coordinated framework to deliver the aid directly to affected communities.
He also commended China for its consistent support, describing the donation as a demonstration of goodwill and growing cooperation in areas including trade, infrastructure, technology, agriculture, and disaster relief.
On his part, Ambassador Yu Dunhai expressed condolences to communities affected by the floods and reaffirmed China’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Nigeria.
“Bilateral relations between both countries continue to witness progress in trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges. This assistance underscores China’s solidarity with Nigeria in difficult times,” Dunhai said.
The envoy was accompanied by officials of the Chinese Embassy, including Zhu Songbo, Cai Xinfa, Sun Luji, Zhang Yifan, and Chen Yao.
