BEVERLY HILLS, November 18, (THEWILL) – The Senate Tuesday confirmed Justice Mahmud Mohammed as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) following his appointment by President Goodluck Jonathan in accordance with section 231(1) of the 1999 Constitution.
A report from the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters stated that after fielding questions from the distinguished Senators on the conflicting judgments from the judiciary, separation between the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice as well as issues regarding seniority in the bench as it affects appointment into the Office of the Chief Justice and the creation of the Anti-Corruption and Constitutional Matters Courts, Mahmud Mohammed was confirmed as the new CJN.
Justice Mohammed replaces incumbent CJN, Justice Aloma Mariam Muktar, who is retiring in a few days at 70 years old.
