September 08, (THEWILL) — The Nigerian Economic Society (NES) has conferred a distinguished fellowship award on Vice President Kashim Shettima and 13 others, including Central Bank Governor, Olayemi Cardoso.
Other recipients include renowned economist and Director of the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-Four on International Monetary Affairs and Development (G-24), Dr Iyabo Masha, and former CBN Deputy Governor, Dr Kingsley Obiora.
Masha was a member of Nigeria’s eight-person Presidential Economic Advisory Council (2019-2022), which directly advised President Muhammadu Buhari on economic policy.
The awards, announced on Monday, September 8, at the NES 66th annual conference in Abuja, recognised their contributions to economic policy, research, and national development.
Established in London in 1957, the Nigerian Economic Society is one of the oldest professional associations in Nigeria. It provides a platform for Nigerian economists and professionals in related fields to influence national economic policymaking. Its flagship publication, the Nigerian Journal of Social and Economic Studies (NJESS), founded in 1959, remains the country’s oldest scholarly journal in the social sciences and humanities. The NES has consistently applied rigorous standards in selecting its Fellows, including the physical presence of the recipient at the ceremony of conferment.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Vice President Shettima and other recipients on their conferment as Fellows of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES).
President Tinubu, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the honour is a testament to their exemplary service, intellectual depth, and commitment to advancing Nigeria’s socio-economic transformation.
He commended VP Shettima for his visionary leadership, deep insights, and relentless dedication to implementing the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in driving inclusive growth, job creation, and sustainable development.
The President also commended Dr Iyabo Masha and others on the honour.
President Tinubu described their recognition as well-deserved and an inspiration to upcoming economists, researchers, and policy experts across the country.
“As a nation, we are proud of your achievements and the example you set for current and future generations. Your passion, innovation, and service to the nation’s economic progress embody the spirit of excellence that our administration celebrates and upholds”, he said.
The President urged the new Fellows to continue leveraging their expertise to support Nigeria’s economic recovery, foster inclusive prosperity, and strengthen its global competitiveness. He assured them of his administration’s determination to collaborate with experts and institutions to deliver enduring growth and shared opportunities for all Nigerians
