February 24, (THEWILL) – Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal has died aged 29 following a motor vehicle incident on Entebbe Road in Uganda on Monday morning. The centre-forward, who represented Vipers SC in the Uganda Premier League, was involved in the accident during the early hours of February 24, 2025.
Lawal joined Vipers SC in July 2022 and played an integral role in the club’s 2022/2023 Uganda Premier League victory. His professional career included successful spells at AS Kigali in Rwanda, where he recorded eight goals and 10 assists in the 2021/2022 season, leading the team to Kigali Peace Cup glory.
The striker’s football journey began in Nigeria, where he represented several Premier League clubs including Kano Pillars FC, Wikki Tourists FC, and FC Nasarawa. His performances caught the attention of Vipers SC, who signed him as part of their significant transfer window acquisitions alongside players such as Alfred Macumu Mudekereza and Olivier Omadjondo Osomba.
In the current season, Lawal participated in eight league matches for Vipers SC before his death. The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has extended condolences to his family and the Vipers SC community, while local authorities continue their investigation into the incident.
Born on September 3, 1995, Lawal established himself as a respected figure in East African football through his technical abilities and goal-scoring capabilities. His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from teammates, club officials, and football associations across Uganda and Nigeria.
