Wale-Edun

December 29, (THEWILL) — The Federal Government has reassured investors and multilateral partners that Nigeria remains stable and economically resilient despite recent security operations, insisting that the country is neither at war with itself nor with any foreign nation.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, gave the assurance in a statement on Sunday, following enquiries arising from a targeted joint security operation carried out by Nigerian and United States forces in Sokoto on Christmas Day.

Edun explained that the operation was a precise, intelligence-led intervention aimed exclusively at terrorist elements threatening innocent lives, national stability and economic activity, stressing that it should not be misinterpreted as a sign of wider conflict.

“What Nigeria is decisively confronting—alongside trusted international partners—is terrorism. This distinction is important, and it is fundamental to understanding the positive economic implications of recent actions”, the Minister said.

According to him, far from destabilising markets or eroding investor confidence, such security actions strengthen the foundations of peace, protect productive communities and reinforce the conditions required for sustainable growth. He noted that security and economic stability are inseparable, adding that every effort to safeguard Nigerians is inherently pro-growth and pro-investment.

Highlighting progress recorded under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, Edun said Nigeria has made tangible and measurable gains in both security and economic reform, reflected in improving macroeconomic indicators.

He disclosed that the economy grew by 3.98 percent in the third quarter of 2025, following a strong 4.23 percent expansion in the second quarter, with expectations of an even stronger performance in the fourth quarter of the year.

The Minister further stated that inflation has declined for the seventh consecutive period and is now below 15 percent, pointing to improved price stability and the effectiveness of coordinated fiscal and monetary measures.

“Our financial markets remain resilient. Domestic and international debt markets are stable and functioning efficiently, supported by prudent fiscal management”, he stated.

Edun also revealed that Nigeria has received credit rating upgrades from Moody’s, Fitch and Standard & Poor’s over the past year, describing them as clear, independent endorsements of the strength of the government’s reforms and the credibility of its economic direction.

“We have maintained fiscal discipline, prioritised efficiency and protected macroeconomic stability, demonstrating resilience in the face of external shocks”, he added.

Looking ahead, the Minister recalled President Tinubu’s recent address in which the administration’s overarching objective for 2026 was outlined as consolidating the gains of 2025, strengthening Nigeria’s economic resilience and building a sustainable, inclusive and growth-oriented economy.

He assured investors that as markets reopen on Monday, December 29, 2025, Nigeria remains focused, reform-driven and committed to stability.

“The fundamentals are strengthening, the policy direction is clear, and the resolve of this administration—to protect lives, secure prosperity and grow the economy—is unwavering”, Edun assured.
