Temi Popoola

March 17, (THEWILL) — Temi Popoola, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group), has said Nigeria’s capital market is undergoing a re-rating as global investors reassess the country’s economic prospects and investment potential.

Speaking in a live interview on BBC Newsday in London, during investor engagements linked to President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to the United Kingdom, Popoola noted that recent strong market performance and greater policy clarity are improving Nigeria’s perception within the global investment community.

“What we are seeing is a gradual re-rating of Nigeria. Investors are beginning to look at the data more closely, the returns, the reforms, the improving macroeconomic direction and that is changing sentiment”, he stated.

He highlighted that Nigeria’s equity market has delivered robust returns in recent months, helping recalibrate long-held risk perceptions and attract renewed international interest. Improvements in the energy sector, including increased domestic refining capacity and ongoing reforms, are reducing exposure to external oil price shocks, further bolstering investor confidence.

Popoola emphasised that consistency in policy implementation remains critical for sustaining this shift in perception. “Global capital responds to clarity and consistency. As those elements become more evident, Nigeria naturally becomes more investable.”

He also noted the importance of engagement with global financial centres such as London, which connect Nigeria’s capital market to international capital pools.

According to Popoola, the evolving market structure and reforms are positioning Nigeria as a viable long-term investment destination. “There is growing recognition that Nigeria offers significant opportunities. The focus now is ensuring that this recognition translates into sustained capital flows.”

He concluded that Nigeria’s capital market is increasingly being viewed through a more data-driven lens, reflecting both its resilience and long-term growth potential.
