SAN FRANCISCO, September 26, (THEWILL) – The Senate has declared that Nigeria’s unity is not negotiable.
The upper legislative chamber came to the conclusion after an executive session after a two-hour closed door session as it resumed from its two-month recess on Tuesday.
The senate resolved to seek avenue of restoring peace in all parts of the country and also asked groups agitating for any cause to do so through constitutional means.
The debate was responding to agitations by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which is seeking the secession of the south-east from the federation and has been declared a terrorist organisation by the military and proscribed by governors of the region.
Senate President Bukola Saraki had faulted the proscription of the group by the military, saying it was unconstitutional before the government procured a court order to legitimatise its action.
He however declared that the senate would investigate the issue when it resumed.
