January 29, (THEWILL) — The Akwa Ibom State Police Command says it has recorded a major breakthrough in the fight against violent crime with the arrest of a suspected armed robber and car snatcher and the recovery of a stolen Toyota Corolla in Uyo.
The arrest, according to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Timfon John, followed a swift response by police operatives on routine night patrol along the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on January 20, 2026, at about 11:30 p.m., after a Bolt driver raised a distress call that he had been robbed at gunpoint and dispossessed of his vehicle.
Although the suspects initially escaped with the vehicle, operatives immediately launched an intelligence-driven operation, which led them to Nkwot Ikono village in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area, where the stolen Toyota Corolla, with registration number DKA 337 CB, was recovered.
One suspect, identified as Sunday Okon, a male from Nna Enin village in Uruan Local Government Area, was arrested in possession of the vehicle. Police sources confirmed that the suspect confessed to the crime during preliminary interrogation.
The suspect is currently in custody, while discreet and intensive investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the criminal gang and recover their weapons.
Commending the operatives for their prompt response and professionalism, the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, reassured residents of the Command’s resolve to combat violent crimes and safeguard lives and property across the state.
The police also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely and credible information to security agencies.
