July 10 (THEWILL) — The wife of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has dismissed reports alleging that she filed for divorce from her husband, describing the claims as “entirely false” and urging the public to disregard what she called misinformation.
Uchechi Okwu-Kanu made the clarification in a statement posted on her verified X account on Friday after online reports claimed she had initiated divorce proceedings against the detained IPOB leader.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I have not filed for divorce. The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation,” she stated.
She expressed concern over what she described as the increasing spread of fabricated stories about her family, lamenting that such reports were being circulated without any attempt at verification.
According to her, the publication of unverified claims not only misleads the public but also undermines the ethics and credibility of responsible journalism.
Uchechi urged members of the public to rely solely on information issued directly by her or through her authorised representatives, warning against giving credence to anonymous or unverified reports circulating online.
She also thanked individuals who contacted her to verify the story before sharing it, describing their actions as a demonstration of responsible information sharing.
The clarification comes amid continued public attention on the legal battle involving Nnamdi Kanu, who has remained in custody following his conviction on terrorism-related offences.
Kanu, who married Uchechi in 2009, is serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre after he was convicted by the Federal High Court, Abuja, in November 2025.
The trial court found him guilty on all seven counts brought against him and sentenced him to life imprisonment on five counts, 20 years’ imprisonment on one count, and five years on another. The court ordered that the sentences run concurrently.
Dissatisfied with the judgment, Kanu filed a notice of appeal before the Court of Appeal on February 4, 2026, seeking to overturn both his conviction and the life sentence imposed by the Federal High Court.
While the appeal remains pending, his wife’s latest statement has sought to put to rest speculation about their marriage, insisting that reports suggesting she had filed for divorce are false and should be ignored.
