September 08, (THEWILL) — The Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Associated and Educational Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities at Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, has vowed to continue its indefinite strike until all outstanding welfare demands are met.
Chairman of the union, Comrade Shishi Luper, said on Monday that although the university management had informally appealed to the union to allow some key staff to resume work, the request was rejected.
He stressed that while the union remains open to dialogue, the welfare of its members has been neglected for too long.
“Our doors are always open for negotiation, but our members’ plight has been played down for years. Until our demands are addressed, the strike continues,” Shishi said.
Efforts to get a reaction from the Registrar of the University, Mr. Barnabas Hemba, were unsuccessful, as calls placed to him were not returned.
The unions had embarked on the strike after an emergency congress on Tuesday, citing management’s failure to implement the new national minimum wage, the 25/35 per cent salary increase, and payment of arrears.
Other demands include the implementation of promotion arrears for staff elevated between 2022 and 2024, settlement of gratuities, regular payment of pensions with arrears, and the reinstatement of monthly remittances to the Contributory Pension Scheme.
