January 16, (THEWILL) — The Lagos State Government has confirmed the collapse of a bungalow classroom block at Odokekere High School in Ikorodu, assuring the public that no students or staff members were injured in the incident.
The Chairman of the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS), Hakeem Smith, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, January 16, 2026.
He described the development as unfortunate but noted that the affected building had already been identified as distressed and marked for demolition under the state’s ongoing school rehabilitation programme.
The partial collapse, which occurred on Thursday evening, triggered panic among residents of the Odo-Kekere community.
However, Smith clarified that all students were safe and in perfect condition, as the structure gave way after academic activities had concluded for the day.
In response to the incident, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the immediate relocation of the affected students to nearby schools to ensure there is no disruption to their learning schedule.
“A team of officials from the SCRPS is scheduled to visit the school for an on-the-spot assessment to enable the government to work out modalities for the immediate construction of an ultra-modern classroom block,” Smith added.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of pupils and teachers, stating that it will continue to prioritize the reconstruction of aging infrastructure to provide conducive learning environments across all public schools.
