January 30, (THEWILL) — The Rivers State Government has clarified that there is no ban on political rallies at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, explaining that the facility is currently an active construction site and remains closed for public safety.
This clarification follows threats by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to forcefully access the stadium after alleging that his supporters were denied permission to hold a pro-Tinubu rally at the venue.
Speaking during a guided inspection of the Elekahia facility on Friday, January 30, 2026, the Coordinating Commissioner for Sports and Attorney General, Christopher Green, stated that the Ministry had not received any formal application for the use of the stadium.
He dismissed claims of denied access as a falsehood intended to create unnecessary political tension.
Green pointed out that the main pitch is currently covered by over 40,000 pipes and heavy machinery, making it hazardous for any public gathering.
The reconstruction project, handled by Monimichelle Sports Construction Limited, aims to upgrade the stadium to world-class FIFA standards.
The lead engineer, Michael Ebitenye, confirmed that the site has been a high-intensity work zone since September 2025.
He warned that heavy foot traffic would damage the vulnerable hydrological network and geotextiles currently being installed, potentially ruining the multi-million Naira investment.
Commissioner Green emphasized that the state government is not blocking political activities, noting that alternative venues like the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium are fully operational and available.
He also questioned why the government would allow the group to use the Elechi Amadi Polytechnic if there were an intent to suppress their activities.
He reaffirmed that the state remains committed to development and supports the federal government’s agenda.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Honour Sirawoo, urged for responsible reporting and stated that no letter requesting the venue exists.
He reiterated that the state government is focused on progress and is fully supportive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubus administration.
The stadium project is reported to be 55 percent complete and is governed by insurance policies that prohibit unauthorized crowds on-site.
